The Confederacy was a group of—originally—7 states that seceded from the Union that were from the South. Despite common belief, the Confederate flag was not the battle flag of the Confederacy.

It's official name was the Confederate States of America, in homage to the founding fathers' United States of America.

Even since 1865, the year the Confederates lost the Civil War(aka the War for Southern Independence), the Confederacy has been a subject of controversy. So has its flags, especially the usage of said flags.

Was it slavery they were fighting for; or was it liberty? While the Confederates did own slaves, is the reason why they fought for secession?
