Huey P Newton was a leader of the Black liberation group in the United States called the Black Panther Party.

He was born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1942. Three years later his family moved to Oakland, California.

He founded the Black Panther Party with his friend Bobby Seale in 1966, in California, USA.

He was arrested in October 1967, charged, probably wrongly, with the shooting death of Oakland police officer John Frey. The case attracted wide attention, including mass support for the release of Huey.

He was released in 1970.
